Someone is Always Listening

Wyatt is obsessed with the telephone. He believes anyone who calls wants to talk to him and will cry if I even think about taking the phone away from him. Actually he doesn't even care if someone is on the other end because he will mumble anyway. I try to be strong and consistent in not letting him have the phone so it doesn't become a problem but it is so cute to see him mimicking those he loves so much.

Last night I was weak and allowed him to hold the phone and even push a few buttons, but I was always near to make sure he wasn't actually dialing 911(like he had done before). We were outside playing and I was on top of things but then we headed inside and I took my eyes off of him for one second.

Brian and I were trying to decided where to go for dinner that night and discussed many different restaurants. Conversation then lead to getting a new cover for our fireplace and where the best place to buy that item would be. Wyatt was touching the stereo again and Brian got on him and sent him on his way, still holding the phone, chatting. Wyatt followed me into the bathroom where I emptied my bladder, put on makeup and fixed my hair to face the public. All the while talking to him explaining what I was doing, like any good mother who knows you need to talk to your toddler often to develop word recognition.

What's the point you ask?

As I was leaving the bathroom I looked at the phone he was holding this whole time and noticed the time was running on the screen like he was talking to someone. I took the phone and turned it off and handed it back to my son.

It rang. The phone rang. Coincidence, I don't think so.

"Hello?"

"Hi! Is this Jenny?"

"Yes." Child screaming in the background because I had taken his precious phone away.

"This is so and so with the Norman Police Department. Your child has been talking to me for the last FIFTEEN MINUTES!"

"I'm so sorry! I thought he was only holding it!"

Laughing. "I see. Listen, there is a FirePlace store here in Norman."

My mind is playing back everything that went on in this house in the last fifteen minutes. "ha. ha. Thanks. Do you know where it is?" Trying to act like I don't care he just listened in to our family life.

"Sorry, I don't. Also, my choice for dinner is Red Lobster."

"Thanks" Laughing again but soooo embarrassed!

"Just from what I hear, I think you look fine for the public too."

"I will never let my son have the phone again, thanks."

"Thank you!"
